Welcome to my website!

I'm Ali Wright based in Ipswich, Suffolk in the UK. I took up photography as a hobby back in late 2021, having recently retired from a career in teaching. I had owned a DSLR camera for many years - it was bought in order to document my daughter's growing up, but I had stopped using it when phone cameras got to be good, and in any case, I'd never got off auto! As my retirement drew close, I started to think about what I might do as a hobby, and quickly landed on photography. I then found the fantastic A Year With My Camera online course and followed that for a year from October 2021 - it gave me the technical know-how I needed to understand my camera better and to get off the auto setting. I soon upgraded to a mirrorless camera and have accumulated a small selection of lenses. I now consider myself a proficient amateur photographer, although there's still a long way for me to go with it and a lot more to learn. I enjoy a bit of everything, really: wildlife, landscape, macro and studio are my favourites.

I started rebuilding this site at the end of 2024 with a view to giving myself a platform to showcase my photography and to share details of my journey. On this page, below my favourite shot from last month, you will find links to galleries from the last few photo shoots I've been on. The full set is being collated gradually on my Galleries page. I've just added a photography diary which will offer details of what I've been doing, what I've learnt and the techniques that I have tested, but this is in its early stages and there's not much there yet.

I'm very much looking forward to sharing my journey with you. I hope you enjoy having a look round my site. I am hoping to update it again soon - it's been a difficult year.

I took a walk in the wood next door and found this practically perfect dendelion flower radiantly reflecting the rays of the sun on one of very many hot and sunny days we had here last month. This radiates positivity and optimism for me, and I find myself hopeful that we might get a better than average summer. We are certainly due one! Many photographers focus on the beautiful dandelion clock with its gossamer seedheads, but I really love the detail in the flower that goes before it, and the colour is just so sumptuous. I hope it makes you feel happy, too.

A very wet day on Dunwich Heath! This was a full-day workshop with Phil Morley and despite the rain, was well worth it.
